Welcome to CS7300 Course Site. I look forward to meeting everyone and please come prepared with an elevator speech of yourself for the first class (on August 25).

We will be going over the program requirement and listen to PhD journeys from faculty and researchers:

We will finish off the overview of PhD program and start on doctoral research, CS research processes, advisor management, time management and research ethics this coming week. n

Please remember to start creating your PhD personal webpage, the first in class HW. You can host your pages under your unix's account in your public_html directory. I need an url that looks something like: https://userweb.cs.txstate.edu/~your netid.

We will finish off CS Research Processes and ethnics and discuss time and advisor management. In the second half of the class, there will be a presentation by a resaercher from IBM. Please read the article on On Being a Scientist if you have time.

Come to class with some well known cases of unetheical conducts.

Please complete your PhD Journey webpage ASAP and move on to the degree plan HW. Be ready to share your degree plan in class if called upon.

Some master level students will join the class this week. So far all faculty will be presenting in person.

You need to make a final decision on the title of your rotation project and email me the title before the start of next class.

We will finish off research ethnics, then strats on systematic literature documentation, Graduate College resources, and how to critically review a research paper this Friday. This is an in-person class.

This will be an asynchronous online class (i.e. we do not meet as a class).

You will need to finish the online library module and complete the library quiz by Oct 13, 12 midnight.

Your literature collection HW is also due on Oct 13.

Your paper review is due on Oct 20 at 12 midnight. The paper review template is available under module "Paper Review". You will find a list of "Breakthrough papers" that faculty recommended on canvas as well.

Don't forget to enter your rotation project details (title and mentor) if you have not done so using the shared spreadsheet.

Please beware that you only have a total of six weeks to complete your rotation project and present your poster in a public event.

We will be covering communicating your research (oral presentation, poster presentation, paper writing) this Friday. We will discuss teh ethic case if there is sufficient time left at the end.

This is an in-person only class.

Note the due dates for your paper critique and the literature collection HWs.

Week 9   (Posted by Anne Ngu, October 16, 2023)
We won't meet this week in-person. You will use class time to complete the CITI online training on Responsible Conduct of Research. You need to upload the completion certificate to Canvas.

The instruction on how to logon to the CITI website is listed under the class schedule page on the class website.

At the completion of the course, they will send you a certificate and please upload that certificat to Canvas under the CITI assignment link.

Beware that the last nine persons on the rotation project spreadsheet will have to present the progress of your Rotation Project on Nov 3rd. The presentation will assess your communication skill, project motivation, methodology for achieviing the project goal, some initiate results if you have some. You will judged by three faculty. Your presentation will be a 15 mins + 5 mins question time.

We will not meet this Friday. You should use the time to prepare for your Rotation Project presentation on Nov 3-17.
Week 11   (Posted by Anne Ngu, November 1, 2023)
The first nine of you will be giving a 15 +5 mins presentation regarding the progress of your rotation project this coming Friday. The presenttaion will be asessed by three faculty.

Please finish your presentation on time. You should not have more than 15 slides.

We will be hearing the presentation from the second batch of nine students this Friday.
