Dr. Hongchi Shi has been working on parallel and distributed processing techniques with applications to image/graphics processing and information services. These applications involve intensive computation and/or distributed information resources, demanding high processing speeds and reliable services. Parallel and distributed processing has become the most promising strategy for these applications. The goals of his research are to investigate some fundamental issues in parallel and distributed algorithms and programming environments to build systems with high performance, usability, and reliability for these applications.

To support his research activities, including financial support for his students, he has been writing research proposals to various funding agencies. So far he has successfully sought support from the University of Missouri Research Board, the Lockheed Martin Corporation, and the Air Force Research Laboratory (Eglin AFB), the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the US Department of Army, and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
