This independent study investigates and documents the process of performance measurement on AMD GPUs and develops an automated framework for performance collection for applications. Performance measurement is the pre-requisite step for any performance analysis and bottleneck detection research. I have investigated several machine-learning workloads on GPU platforms to gain hands-on experience in conducting HPC research. Specifically, I have used the AMD Rocprof profiler, set up an automated performance measurement harness, and adapted a data pre-processing tool for transforming collected data to be analyzed using an open-source performance analysis tool. The outcome of this research has been used to characterize the performance behaviors of machine-learning workloads.
